Nearly 45 inmates in Fashafuyeh Prison in southern Tehran are to be isolated from the general prison population and punitively placed in a small hall.
The creation of sealed-off units aims to harass inmates and prison authorities unlawfully use it as a penalty.
These inmates have been held in hall 12, dubbed the “closed hall” since December 28th, being denied any telephone calls or family visits. They have been deprived of medical services and access to the prison shop.
Prisoners have also been cut off from hygienic requirements, facing myriads of health difficulties in this closed area.
The 45 are punished mainly for refusing to accept prison authorities’ orders.
In a recent case prisoners were reportedly held in such units in conditions of severe physical and social isolation in Gohardasht Prison, west of Tehran.
