“There are 240,000 prisoners in Iran’s prisons and prisons do not have the necessary capacity to hold this many people,” according to the Head of the Judiciary in the southwestern province of Khuzestan.
“The prisons in this province can only hold 5,000 prisoners but there are currently 12,000 inmates in these prisons and managing this number of prisoners is a difficult task for the Prison Department,” Afsharnia said.
He mentioned that there were currently 293 prisoners with unintentional crimes in this province and said “To release these prisoners, we need 61,547 USD.”
