Iran: Official says death penalty for drug charges will not be abolished
Referring to annul the capital punishment for drug related charges, Deputy Secretary General of the Staff to Combat Narcotics Drugs said in a news conference, “The issue of abolishing the death penalty is not even in question and such a law has not been written. Some parts of the Punishment Law have been amended which does not have a large effect on the current punishment procedures. People should not think that the death sentence for drug traffickers would be abolished in the Islamic Republic,” according to the state-run Aftab news agency report on August 1, 2017.
The execution of drug traffickers in the Islamic Republic cannot be annulled and only the process of their punishment will be amended. Moreover, even if this bill is upheld by the Islamic Consultative Assembly, it will not affect the process of our job, he went on to add.
