Start of a New Wave of Executions in Iran: Execution of 9 Prisoners in One Day

April 22, 2024
FacebookTwitterEmail

The Iranian Judiciary has initiated a new wave of executions, and over the past two weeks, the execution process has been increasing unprecedentedly. In a single day, the death sentences of nine prisoners were carried out.

According to the report received by the Iran Human Rights Monitor (Iran HRM), on early Sunday morning, April 21, 2024, the death sentences of five prisoners were carried out in Kerman Central Prison, and two Baloch prisoners were hanged in Chabahar Central Prison on the same day. Simultaneously, two other prisoners were executed in Qazal Hasar Prison in Karaj. All nine prisoners had previously been sentenced to death on charges related to drug offenses.

The identities of the five prisoners executed in Kerman Central Prison are as follows: Ahmadreza Miri, 34 years old, from Zabol, Shamsalldin Kashani, 53 years old, Shokat Shahbakhsh, from one of the villages in Zahedan. A Kurdish prisoner named Jamal Mardani, 48 years old, from Mianeh County. The identity of one executed Baloch prisoner is currently under investigation.

The identities of the two prisoners executed in Chabahar Central Prison are as follows: Saeed Jadgal, 30 years old, from a district in Sistan and Baluchestan Province, Mohammad Anjamrooz, 33 years old, also from a district in Sistan and Baluchestan Province. Both prisoners were executed in this prison.

The identities of the two prisoners executed in Qazal Hasar Prison in Karaj are as follows: Alireza Shahbaz, 38 years old, from Tehran, Abdulbari Pashto, an Afghan national. Both prisoners were married and had children.

The execution of these nine prisoners has not been officially announced by the authorities, especially the judiciary, and they have been executed in silence without any news coverage.

The execution of prisoners involved in drug-related crimes has increased several-fold compared to the previous year. Prisoners associated with drug offenses are often from the slums near cities and are considered to be from impoverished segments of society. They are sentenced to death through an unfair judicial process. While crimes related to drugs should never be subject to the death penalty according to international laws.

The Iran Human Rights Monitor (Iran HRM) calls upon the United Nations, the European Union, and their member states not to remain silent in the face of these executions. It condemns these state-sanctioned massacres and demands immediate and practical action to stop this bloodshed.
