The Life of Political Prisoner Kamran Rezaei-Far Is in Danger

Cancer, Pulmonary Embolism, and Denial of Medical Treatment

Human rights organizations have raised alarm over the critical condition of 59-year-old political prisoner Kamran Rezaei-Far in Evin Prison. He is battling severe illnesses such as gastrointestinal cancer and pulmonary embolism while being denied access to essential medical care.

Rezaei-Far, who had suffered from severe gastrointestinal symptoms for months, underwent surgery only after a delayed diagnosis. The operation resulted in the removal of half of his stomach and pancreas. He is currently suffering from pulmonary embolism and blood clots in his lungs, which pose a serious threat to his life.

Despite his urgent need for chemotherapy and specialized care in medical facilities, judicial authorities have refused to grant him medical furlough. According to informed sources, Evin prison officials—particularly Heydatollah Farzadi (the prison warden) and the head of the prison clinic—have persistently obstructed his transfer to a hospital.

Following his surgery, Kamran Rezaei-Far, in an extremely weakened state and suffering from severe weight loss, was chained to his hospital bed with handcuffs and shackles. Currently, he is being held in inhumane and life-threatening conditions without access to continuous medical care.

Human rights activists stress that his continued imprisonment under these circumstances could lead to irreparable consequences. They are calling for his immediate and unconditional release to receive appropriate medical treatment.

Arrest and Conviction History

Kamran Rezaei-Far, a Tehran resident and father of one, was first arrested in January 2020 on charges of affiliation with the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK) and transferred to the security wards of Evin Prison. After being released on bail, he was re-arrested in June 2020 and initially sentenced to death by Judge Amouzad on charges of “corruption on earth.” This sentence was later commuted to five years in prison.

He was released from prison in late 2022, but was arrested again in September 2023 and sent back to Evin Prison. In November 2023, the Tehran Revolutionary Court, presided over by Judge Iman Afshari, sentenced him and three other political prisoners to five years in prison. The charge against him was renewed affiliation and cooperation with the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran.
