Iran: Starving prisoners for a month

Inmates in Tabriz Prison, northwest of Iran, are being starved by prison authorities in the past month under the pretext of repair-construction work.

“Deprived of food, detainees receive a small amount of rice as their lunch and a small bowl of bad smelling soup as supper to avoid starving,” according to witnesses.

Most prisoners are suffering from malnutrition and gastrointestinal disease, being deprived of enough food over a long period.

Inmates have been told they can buy food from the prison store, while it is very expressive and the majority just can’t afford it.

The authorities have not mentioned any time to end the so-called repairs.
