Iran ranks fourth in Asia in terms of prison population
According to reports, there are 287 prisoners for every 1000 persons, which makes Iran fourth in Asia and eighth in the world in terms of prison population.
70 percent of the prison population are young people, according to the head of the Prison Organization.
“Persons under 18 usually commit petty crimes while those who are over 25 years of age commit drug related crimes”, Asghar Jahangirian said.
“Eighty percent of prisoners have a diploma or are undergraduates while 20 percent have higher education,” the state-run IRNA news agency reported on June 27, 2017.
