Read moreDetailsIranian wrestling champion Navid Afkari was executed at dawn on September 12, 2020, despite a mockery of a trial and national and international outrage over his death sentence.
Navid Afkari was arrested during a wave of anti-government protests in 2018 and was accused of murdering a security guard during the protests in the southern city of Shiraz.
His two brothers, Vahid and Habib Afkari were also arrested for taking part in 2018 protests.
They were convicted of “enmity against God” and participation in anti-state street protests. Habib has been sentenced to 27 years and three months in prison and Vahid to 25 years in prison. Both have also been sentenced to 74 lashes.
The three brothers were tortured to make confessions against each other.
