News from the Central Prison of Urmia indicates that clashes broke out today, June 9, 2021, after some 300 inmates held protests and stood up to security forces.

The prison’s agents and warden retreated after four hours of brutalizing and injuring many inmates.

The clinic of the Central Prison of Urmia had discontinued distribution of the prisoners’ drugs, including the methadone sedatives, for several days.

More than 500 inmates are in dire conditions after the prison’s clinic discontinued the distribution of methadone.

Methadone sedatives are distributed daily to inmates by the prison health service. According to reliable sources, the authorities of the Central Prison of Urmia have withheld the methadone drug for several days to put pressure on inmates.

This morning, some 300 prisoners gathered in front of the prison’s clinic at 8:30 a.m. and expressed their outrage over the clinic’s failure to distribute their drugs.

The prisoners shouted: “You deliberately addicted us. You wanted to make us miserable so that we do not protest.”

Shortly afterwards, prison guards attacked inmates by batons and sticks, and started beating them. But inmates stood up to them.

Finally, at 12.30 p.m., the prison staff and warden, including the clinic’s director, surrendered to the prisoners’ demand, and handed over the medicines they needed.

The situation is volatile in the Central Prison of Urmia and the inmates can no longer tolerate the hellish circumstances.

On Sunday, May 30, three companies including 120 guards attacked wards 1 and 2 in this prison where inmates went on strike in protest of the horrible quality of food.
