Abbas Daris’ Execution Temporarily Suspended

July 26, 2023
FacebookTwitterEmail

Mr. Daris’ lawyer posted a tweet this morning, Wednesday, July 26, 2023, informing the public of the order to stop the execution of Mr. Abbas Daris. Ms. Fereshteh Tabanian announced that the request for the resumption of legal proceedings had been registered with the 9th Branch of the Supreme Court and the order to halt the implementation of the verdict was sent to the First Branch of the Office of the Implementation of Verdicts in Mahshahr. The decision follows extensive national and international outcries against the execution of Mr. Abbas Daris.

According to an informed source, Abbas Daris is also a witness to the massacre in the marshes of Mahshahr in November 2019. For this reason, he has been sentenced to death despite being innocent. The Iranian judiciary intends to eliminate witnesses to the massacre.

It should be noted that in November 2019, a bloody clash broke out between the people on the one hand, and the Revolutionary Guards and the State Security Force on the other in the marshes of Chamran Township in Mahshahr. In this clash, several people and one officer were killed, and a very large number of people were injured.

Mr. Daris was arrested on December 17, 2019, and his first court hearing was held on May 10, 2020, via video conference, on charges of “waging war on God” and “disrupting public order and peace.” The second court session was held on September 13, 2022, by the Revolutionary Court in Mahshahr prison. Finally, on October 22, 2022, Branch 1 of the Revolutionary Court of Mahshahr sentenced him to death.

Kefayat Hizbawi, the wife of Abbas Daris, suffered a stroke due to the psychological pressure of following up on her husband’s case and learning about the possibility of his death sentence.

Despite all efforts, on Wednesday, July 5, 2023, the death sentence of Abbas Daris was upheld by the Supreme Court in Tehran. The day before, on July 4, 2023, Fereshteh Tabanian, Abbas Daris’ lawyer, tweeted that her client’s death sentence had been upheld by the Supreme Court.

The court issued Mr. Daris’ death sentence based on the forced confessions extracted from him during interrogation by the Ministry of Intelligence. Abbas Daris has repeatedly denied the confessions extracted from him under torture. He recently stated very clearly that he was not afraid of execution because he was confident that he was innocent.

The letter written by the teenage son of Abbas Daris to the international community is worthy of consideration:

To the kind people of the world. I am Ali Daris, the eldest son of Abbas and Kefayat. Unfortunately, my mother suffered a stroke after hearing the news of my father’s possible death sentence and left us alone. Now our father is in danger of being executed. My brothers, Mehdi, 12, and Mohammad, 8, and I wonder if the world is so cruel that it would let us lose our father, too. The three of us appeal to all organizations, governments, kind people of the world, and even children around the world to help prevent our father’s execution. This is very frightening, please help us bring our father home.

Ali Daris, 16
