Jailed political prisoner Hassan Rastegar Majd, was flogged 50 times on Thursday June 1, in Urmia Prison, northwest of Iran.
The 51-year-old 51 was spuriously charged for “disturbing prison’s order” in 2016. He was trialed simultaneously by two courts and thus received double punishment for the same charge.
He was totally sentenced to 9 months behind bars and 70 lashes by two different court branches.
The first verdict was issued by the 2nd Branch of Urmia’s Revolutionary Court chaired by judge Ali Sheikhlou on September 18, 2016, and the second verdict was issued by the Branch 107 of Urmia’s Court on March 22, 2017.
Rastegar Majd had gone on a 32-day hunger strike
since December 3, 2016, protesting such injustice. He ended his hunger strike with the promise of putting an end to such fabricated charges if he did so. Prison authorities and the judge overseeing the case however, dropped the agreement and the second verdict was also issued against him.
