Iran: Authorities punish political prisoner by denying medical treatment

Afshin Baimani, a political prisoner in Rajaei Shahr Prison, west of Tehran, suffering from a serious heart condition and arteriosclerosis, has recently been refused hospital treatment by authorities after refusing to have his hands and feet cuffed.

A prison doctor has warned that Mr. Baymani’s condition is at risk of heart failure and must be hospitalized under special care. However, he continues to be denied medical access.

Afshin Baimani, in his mid-forties, is married and has two children, and also suffers from kidney disease.

He was imprisoned in Tehran’s notorious Evin Prison on the charge “moharebeh” (enmity against God)and sentenced to death on September 6th, 2000.  The ruling, however, was commuted to life imprisonment in 2006.

He was unofficially informed of a new case based on charges of allegedly “insulting sanctities” and “insulting the supreme leader”.
