Swedish media have reported that the death sentence for Ahmad Reza Jalali, an Iranian doctor and researcher who lives in Stockholm, has been announced to his lawyer. Mr. Jalali was arrested last year on charges of espionage and was threatened with execution by Judge Abolqasem Salavati. Sweden’s state television quoted his wife Vida Mehrnia, as saying that her husband’s lawyer told her that the death sentence was announced to him.
Ahmad Reza Jalali, has been living in Sweden since 2009. The Iranian academic Ahmad Reza Jalali had traveled to Iran in recent years at the invitation of educational and academic institutions.
(Ahmad Reza Jalali studied medicine at the University of Tabriz in Iran and obtained a Ph.D. in disaster medicine, the study of health care management during large-scale emergencies, at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm. He also earned a master’s degree from a program in disaster medicine jointly organized by CRIMEDIN and VUB. Now, he’s a professor in the same program and a scientist. His research focuses on how hospitals can best prepare for events with large numbers of casualties, including natural disasters and terrorist attacks.)
