Iran: 2 Kurdish activist women detained, dozens persecuted in recent months

On Wednesday, December 13, Kurdish activist women Soheila Zubeiri and Safa Hassanpour, were transferred to Mahabad Prison to serve their prisoner terms. Soheila Zubeiri, 46, was sentenced to 24 months of prison on charges of “disrupting public order and participating in a gathering” in protest to the suspicious death of Farinaz Khosravani, while 18-year-old Safa Hassanpour was sentenced to six months of prison for the same charges.

Another Two Kurdish citizens, identified as Kavan Mahmoudian and Naiem Ahmadpour, were taken to Sanandaj Central Prison from the Intelligence Agency Detention Center. Kavan Mahmoudian spent two months in solitary confinement in the detention center. Naiem Ahmadpour was transferred to prison after 20 days at the detention center.

According to Kurdish human right organizations, in the last 11 months of this year, 23 journalists, media activists and administrators of Telegram channels in Kurdistan have been also arrested by Iranian Security forces. During this time, five journalists, three photographers, and 15 Telegram channel admins were arrested by Iranian security agencies.
From these people, seven were from Mahabad, eight were from Gilane Gharb, three from Baneh and five others were from Mashhad, Kohdasht, Piranshahr, Orumieh and Naghadeh.
Also during this period, five Kurdish journalists were sentenced to overall 12 years and 6 months of prison by the Iranian Judiciary.
