The status of two young women arrested during the recent protests in Tehran has remained in limbo in the Qarchak Prison of Varamin.
Niloufar Homafar and Yasamin Aryani, were arrester on August 2, 2018 while taking part in a public protest on Vali-e Asr Avenue in downtown Tehran, demanding their basic human rights.
Reports indicate Yasaman Aryani, 23, was arrested after helping an old woman thrown to the ground by anti-riot units.
The young women boldly posted a message via a mobile phone from inside a State Security Force van as they were being transferred to jail.
Thousands of protesters returned to the streets of several Iranian cities in early August, amid growing anxiety over the country’s economic difficulties.
Iranians angered by high inflation and increasing economic hardship caused in part by the dramatic decline of the national currency, the rial, were protesting across the country for several days.
The government Iran daily reported that “scattered and unlicensed gatherings” were held in the cities of Mashhad, Karaj, and Shiraz, as well as in a square in the capital, Tehran.
Videos posted on social media purported to show anti riot units resorting to violent against the protesters.
