The Revision Court of Tehran Province upheld the prison verdict for Tehran University student activist Leila Hosseinzadeh, issued by Branch 26 of the Court of Tehran in March 2018.
On Monday, June 24, 2019, Branch 36 of the Revision Court of Tehran Province informed her of her sentence. Leila Hosseinzadeh has been sentenced to 30 months’ imprisonment on the charge of “association and collusion against national security” and another one year for “propaganda against the state.” She is also banned from leaving the country for two years.
Leila Hosseinzadeh, secretary of the students’ central council of Tehran University, was arrested on January 1, 2018, during the nationwide uprisings in Iran, but was released on bail some time later.
Student activist Leila Hosseinzadeh had been previously sentenced to six years in prison and another two years of being deprived of leaving the country, on March 7, 2018, by Branch 26 of the Court of Tehran. Her first trial was held on October 22, 2018, and her revision hearing was held on May 14, 2019.
Following this verdict, a group of students of Tehran University‘s School of Social Sciences held a protest gathering against the continuing trend of arrests and verdicts issued for students by the Judiciary.
The Sciences and Higher Education Ministry officials had previously promised students that student cases would be terminated and returned to the university, a promise that has never been delivered. Student protesters demanded a response from officials and accountability on the situation of the arrested students and other students of the university who are awaiting their verdicts. Student protesters emphasized that if they do not receive any response from the officials, they would continue their protests.
In another development, a female labor activist Anisha Assadollahi was rearrested in the street by 12 intelligence agents on Tuesday, June 18, 2019.
She had been recently released from prison on bail after being arrested during a Labor Day protest demonstration in Tehran.
Tuesday night, June 18, twelve intelligence agents arrested Anisha Assadollahi as she was walking in the street. They took her to her father’s home and then to her brother’s, ransacking the places and confiscating their laptops.
Ms. Assadollahi contacted her family a few hours after getting arrested, informing them that she was in Evin Prison. No reason has been provided for the re-arrest of this labor activist. Anisha Assadollahi was among a number of labor activists including 15 women who had been arrested during their protest demonstration in Tehran on the International Workers Day on May 1.
