Silence of officials led to spread of Coronavirus in Iran – Arash Sadeghi

Civil activist and political prisoner Arash Sadeghi sent an open letter from Rajaei Shahr Prison of Karaj in which he blamed the regime’s officials for foot dragging to quarantine the city of Qom and to contain the coronavirus.

Noting remarks by officials and their wrong decisions to continue the flights to China, hold the parliamentary elections and celebrate the anniversary of the 1979 revolution, Mr. Sadeghi held them accountable for the outbreak of coronavirus and putting lives of the people of Iran at risk.

In part of his letter, Arash Sadeghi wrote: “The silence of officials was the cause of the outbreak of coronavirus in Iran. They did so to hold a more glorious election, and the march for the anniversary of 1979 Revolution. They did not shut down the religious centers in Qom which was the epicenter of the spread of this virus. “

He stressed, “The march for the anniversary of the Revolution and the February 20 elections were their excuse to conceal all the information about the outbreak of the Coronavirus in Iran and its outbreak in the country.”

In another part of his open letter, Mr. Sadeghi wrote, “In the literature of the rulers of the Islamic Republic there is always a hypothetical enemy to blame in all the crises and to attribute all the faults and shortcomings on it, instead of accepting the responsibility and taking preventive measures. The latest example was the outbreak of Coronavirus in Iran which was blamed on the conspiracies and rumors of the enemy.”

“The spread of a disease like coronavirus from the city of Qom contradicts all the dialogues made by the clergy and this is the reason for their opposition to quarantine the city,” Mr. Sadeghi said in his open letter.

In conclusion of his letter, Mr. Sadeghi wrote, “If living in a labyrinth of lies is the pillar of this authoritarian regime, it is no surprise that the most dangerous threat to it is living in the circle of truth and reality. This is why, the truth is suppressed more than anything else… Because all the real problems and vital issues are concealed underneath a thick cover of lies.”

Civil activist and political prisoner Arash Sadeghi is incarcerated in Rajaei Shahr Prison (a.k.a Gohardasht) of Karaj, serving a sentence of 19 years in prison issued by the Revolutionary Court of Tehran.
