Political Prisoner Mohammad Boroghani Denied Medical Furlough Despite Alarming Health Condition

April 12, 2025
FacebookTwitterEmail

Mohammad Boroghani, a political prisoner and one of those arrested during the nationwide protests of 2022 in Iran, has been denied medical furlough despite his deteriorating health condition. According to sources close to his family, his treatment has been interrupted midway, and although prison doctors have emphasized the necessity of continuing medical care, judicial and security authorities continue to block his access to medical leave.

Boroghani has not been granted a single day of furlough for several months. His family’s repeated attempts to seek answers have been met with silence and inaction from the authorities. A source stated, “Our concern grows every day. We don’t understand why such a basic and humane right is being denied. This negligence is endangering his health.”

Initially arrested during the 2022 protests, Boroghani was sentenced to death by the Revolutionary Court presided over by Judge Abolghasem Salavati on charges of moharebeh (enmity against God), based on his alleged participation in street protests in Pakdasht. However, upon appeal, the Supreme Court overturned the death sentence and reduced it to five years in prison and ten years of exile in Na’in, Isfahan Province.

While this revision spared him from execution, Boroghani is now forced to live far from his family in prison and exile, deprived even of basic rights such as medical care and furlough.

Before his arrest, Mohammad was a hardworking young laborer. His father, Hossein Boroghani, had previously stated: “We are from Sabzevar but have been living in Pakdasht, Varamin for years. I make a living by collecting scrap metal. Mohammad started working at the age of 7 in a shoe repair shop. Later, he worked at a water pump manufacturing company. He was a skilled cobbler and was building an honorable life for himself.”

This story portrays the human face of a young man imprisoned merely for demanding freedom and justice.
