During only five days (July 23–27, 2025), the authorities of the Islamic Republic of Iran executed at least 17 individuals in various prisons across the country. Among them, 7 prisoners in the prisons of Isfahan, Khorramabad, Shiraz, Taybad, and Qezel Hesar. Two of those executed were political prisoners: Behrouz Ehsani and Mehdi Hassani.
Execution Details:
Isfahan: In the early morning of Sunday, July 27, Reza Mirforoughi was executed at Dastgerd Prison in Isfahan on charges of murder.
Khorramabad: On the same day, Hamzeh Moradian was hanged at Khorramabad Prison after serving 8 years in prison, also on charges of murder.
Qezel Hesar, Karaj: Two inmates, Saeed Kashani and Naser Nazari, were executed on the morning of July 27 in Qezel Hesar Prison. Both were convicted of murder.
Shiraz (Adelabad Prison): In the early morning of Wednesday, July 23, three prisoners — Behzad Gholamzadeh, Latif Kargar, and Saman Heidari — were executed at Adelabad Prison. The first two were charged with drug-related offenses and had been imprisoned for several years. Saman Heidari was also executed on the same day.
Taybad: On the morning of Saturday, July 26, Khodayar Ahmadkhani, a 46-year-old from Mashhad, was executed in Taybad Prison after serving 8 years for drug-related charges.
A Worrying Trend of Increasing Executions
The execution of these 7 prisoners, along with others carried out in the same short timeframe, signals an alarming rise in the issuance and implementation of death sentences in Iran. The repeated use of capital punishment — especially in the absence of judicial transparency, fair access to legal representation, or fair trials — constitutes a blatant violation of fundamental human rights principles.
