Early this morning, Iranian authorities executed political prisoner Mehran Bahramian, 32, at Dastgerd Prison in the city of Isfahan. Bahramian, originally from the city of Semirom in Isfahan Province, had been arrested in connection with the nationwide protests following the death of Mahsa Amini in 2022.
According to Mizan, the official news agency of Iran’s judiciary, Bahramian was accused of involvement in an alleged attack on a security forces’ vehicle on 31 December 2022, in the Semirom region. The report claims that Mohsen Rezaei, a member of Iran’s security forces, was killed in the incident. Bahramian was convicted of moharebeh (“waging war against God”), a charge frequently used against political dissidents and protestors in Iran.
Bahramian’s execution comes amid widespread concern over Iran’s continued use of the death penalty against individuals linked to the 2022–2023 protest movement. His brother, Morad Bahramian, was killed on 16 November 2022 during the protests, reportedly shot by Iranian security forces. Another brother, Fazel Bahramian, was also arrested alongside Mehran in December 2022.
Following their arrests, both Mehran and Fazel were reportedly held in solitary confinement under the supervision of IRGC Intelligence (Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps) and subjected to severe interrogation and torture. Both men were later sentenced to death in proceedings that lacked transparency and failed to meet international standards for due process.
The case has drawn condemnation from human rights organizations. Iran Human Rights Monitor (Iran HRM) has called on the international community to take urgent action to halt the executions of political prisoners in Iran.
