Shahin Vasaf, a 29-year-old political prisoner from Salmas and resident of Urmia, has been sentenced to 10 years in prison by Branch 1 of the Urmia Revolutionary Court. This verdict comes after the Supreme Court overturned his previous death sentence, which had been issued on charges of “espionage for Israel.”
Vasaf was arrested on September 21, 2022, during the nationwide protests, along with his cousin, by Urmia intelligence forces. In the early weeks of detention, his family was kept completely in the dark about his whereabouts, while he endured lengthy interrogations and heavy pressure.
Torture and Forced Confessions
Sources close to his family report that Vasaf was subjected to severe physical and psychological torture to force him into confessing on camera. These coerced confessions later became the basis for his death sentence.
Vasaf’s case is a clear example of violations of fair trial standards. He was denied access to an attorney of his own choosing and was only represented by a court-appointed lawyer lacking independence and effectiveness. Court sessions were held behind closed doors and without the presence of media or independent observers. Legal experts have described the entire process as politically motivated and unlawful.
Vasaf’s family has also faced persistent security pressure. They have repeatedly been threatened, barred from speaking with the media, and subjected to humiliating treatment during prison visits.
