In recent days, at least eight prisoners were executed in the prisons of Birjand, Qezel Hesar, Gonabad, Kashmar, Ramhormoz, and Rasht. With these executions, the number of executed prisoners in less than one month has reached at least 140—an alarming figure that once again highlights the extensive use of the death penalty in Iran.
Executions in various prisons
Birjand (September 16, 2025):
Abdolsamad Salarzehi (42 years old, from Hirmand, married and father of six children) and Abdolmajid Barahouei (41 years old, from Zahedan) were executed on drug-related charges. Abdolmajid Barahouei’s family was denied the right to a final visit.
Qezel Hesar, Karaj (September 15, 2025):
Masoud Okhtizadeh (from Kuhdasht) and Akbar Emami (from Noorabad, Lorestan) were executed on drug-related charges.
Gonabad (September 16 2025):
Parviz Yousefzehi (27 years old, from Zahedan and resident of Sari) was executed on drug charges after five years in prison.
Ramhormoz (September 15, 2025):
Khalil Rashidi (from Ramshir), who had been arrested in 2020 on murder charges, was executed.
Kashmar (September 14, 2025):
Reza Sarani (51 years old, from Zabol, married and father of two children) was executed on drug charges.
Rasht (September 3, 2025):
Mohsen Yarmohammadi (44 years old, from Tehran), who had been detained on murder charges, was executed in Lakan Prison.
A significant portion of these executions were carried out for drug-related charges, despite repeated calls by international bodies to halt the use of the death penalty for non-violent crimes. Reports also indicate that some of these executions were conducted without prior notice to the families and without granting the right to a final visit.
