Iran: 41 percent of imprisoned men and 25 percent of imprisoned women are drug offenders

The head of the Prison Organization, Asghar Jahangir, said in a Judiciary meeting that 41 percent of male prisoners in Iran and 25 percent of female prisoners were jailed as a result of drug related crimes. From all prisoners, 23 percent are under investigation while 77 percent have been convicted, according to the state-run ILNA news agency report on August 9, 2017.
Forty-nine percent of prisoners have been sentenced to prison terms and fines, 20 percent to only prison terms, nine percent to only fines and 12 percent are financial prisoners, he said.
