The concerning physical condition of Masoumeh Yavari in prison

FacebookTwitterEmail

On Monday, September 11, 2023, Masoumeh Yavari, a former political prisoner who had previously suffered from severe disc herniation in Evin Prison, has sustained severe damage to her back due to prolonged interrogations in Dolat Abad Prison in Isfahan, and two discs in her back have protruded.

Ms. Yavari was arrested by security forces at her residence in Golpayegan on September 4, 2023, and after a search of her house, she was transferred to Dolat Abad Prison in Isfahan

According to an informed source, Ms. Yavari had previously been diagnosed with a herniated disc while in prison, and she is currently suffering from severe back pain in prison. Prolonged interrogations have led to the protrusion of two discs in her back.

Masoumeh Yavari, born in 1978, is a homemaker and a mother of two children. She had previously spent three years in Evin, Gohardasht, and Qarchak prisons for her participation in the 2009 protests and her alleged connection with the opposition People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran. The court initially accused her of waging war on God (Moharebeh), but after some time, she was acquitted and sentenced to seven years in prison. She was released from prison after serving three years.

A source close to Mrs. Yavari’s family informed the Iran Human Rights Monitor (Iran HRM) that “Ms. Yavari underwent a disc herniation surgery some time ago and requires post-operative care. However, her physical condition has deteriorated significantly while in detention.”

According to the informed source, “On the day of Ms. Yavari’s arrest, more than 20 intelligence officers stormed into her residence with a judicial order from the prosecutor when her husband returned home. Apparently, they had been stationed around her house. They initially charged them with supporting the People’s Mojahedin of Iran and damaging public property. After searching her house and confiscating personal belongings such as mobile phones and laptops, she was transferred to one of the detention centers of an intelligence institution to initiate legal proceedings.

Masoumeh Yavari also suffers from a heart condition, arterial blockage, and severe hypothyroidism. The prison authorities did not accept her necessary medications. As a result, her condition requires urgent medical attention and emergency treatment. Immediate measures should be taken to halt the inhumane treatment against her and address her case promptly.
