The striking prisoners in Iranian prisons issued a statement announcing that they will continue their hunger strike for the eleventh week.
On Tuesday, April 9, 2024, the prisoners’ hunger strike continued for the eleventh week in protest against the widespread executions in Iran.
Announcing the continuation of the hunger strike, the striking prisoners announced that they will continue their weekly hunger strike today, Tuesday, April 9, 2024.

In their statement, the prisoners wrote:
“The regime in Iran last year set a grim record for the highest number of executions in the past eight years, prompting the Human Rights Council to condemn the regime for the 70th time.
However, the Islamic Republic, whose rule is fundamentally upheld by the death penalty, continues to execute young people in prison, ignoring human rights violations and international condemnation. In retaliation for its defeats, and with the conclusion of Ramadan and the issuance of new death sentences by the judiciary, there is a growing fear that the number of executions—reduced in the past two months—will rise once again.
This week, striking prisoners marked the ninth consecutive ‘No to Execution Tuesdays” to protest death sentences. As part of their broader hunger strike campaign, now in its 11th week, prisoners from Qezel-Hesar, Evin, Khorramabad, Khoy, Naqadeh, Mashhad, Saqqez, and other prisons joined the strike on Tuesday, April 9, 2024. They called on inmates across the country to join the strike and appealed to human rights organizations to address the life-threatening conditions faced by prisoners.
Signed,
A group of striking prisoners, April 9, 2024″
It is worth noting that this hunger strike began on January 29, 2024, and remains ongoing.
- Political prisoners go on hunger strike to protest mass executions
- Execution of a prisoner in Khorramabad Central Prison during Ramadan
- Tohid Faraji sentenced to death in Amol Prison
It should be noted that more than 50 political prisoners are currently on death row in Iranian prisons. In addition, thousands of prisoners are currently on death row in Qezel-Hesar Prison and other prisons. Nearly 340 prisoners are on death row in only two prisons, Lakan Prison, Rasht and Zanjan.
