On May 21, 2024, Babak Alipour and Vahid Bani Amerian were charged with rebellion by Branch 5 of the Public and Revolutionary Prosecutor’s Office in Tehran. This accusation could lead to severe sentences, including the possibility of execution.
Iran Human Rights Monitor (Iran HRM) would like to remind that the charge of rebellion can potentially lead to severe punishments, including execution, crucifixion, amputation of the right hand and left foot, or banishment.
Babak Alipour: Political prisoner Babak Alipour, along with his brother, Ruzbeh Alipour, was arrested on November 4, 2018, while working at the Tarabar Market in Rasht. Babak Alipour was summoned and transferred to Lakan Prison in Rasht for serving his sentence on July 20, 2019. He had previously been released from Evin Prison in 2023 after enduring two years of imprisonment. However, he was arrested again in the winter of 2024.
Political prisoner Babak Alipour, after four months of uncertainty and confinement in Ward 209 of Evin Prison, has been charged with rebellion. The charges against this political prisoner include “rebellion, membership and collaboration with the People’s Mojahedin Organization, and conspiring against national security through collaboration with the People’s Mojahedin Organization.” These charges have been communicated to him.
Vahid Bani Amerian: Vahid Bani Amerian, 32 years old, is a graduate of Khajeh Nasir Toosi University of Technology in Tehran, with a master’s degree in management. He hails from Sanandaj, Kermanshah. In December 2018, he was sentenced to five years in prison on charges of “propaganda against the regime and insulting the leadership.”
In March 2019, Vahid Bani Amerian was once again arrested, and in September 2020, he was sentenced by Judge Moghiseh in Branch 28 of the Tehran Revolutionary Court. He was convicted on charges of “acting against national security through effective membership and collaboration with the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran,” “propaganda against the regime,” “destruction of government property,” “conspiracy and collusion for actions against national security,” and “communication with the Mojahedin Organization.” He received a sentence of 10 years in prison and 2 years of exile. This prisoner was arrested on December 22, 2023, by the agents of the Ministry of Intelligence, who reportedly subjected him to physical assault. He was then transferred to Evin Prison.
