A Surge in Death Penalties Across Iran

January 27, 2025
FacebookTwitterEmail

On Sunday, January 26, 2025, the death sentences of three prisoners were carried out at Ghezel Hesar Prison. The individuals, identified as Farzad Mirzaei, Saman Hashemi, and Farhad Ferdini, were all from Harsin. Farzad Mirzaei, 45 years old and a father of one, Saman Hashemi, 45 years old and a father of two, and Farhad Ferdini, 35 years old, were arrested seven years ago on drug-related charges and subsequently sentenced to death.

In addition to these three prisoners, several other executions have been carried out in recent days across other prisons in the country. In Nishapur Prison, a 39-year-old prisoner from Razavi Khorasan Province was executed on Thursday, January 25, 2025. This individual, whose identity has not been disclosed, was arrested in 2023 on murder charges and sentenced to death.

Similarly, at Bandar Abbas Prison, the execution of Sardar Mohammad, an Afghan national, was carried out at dawn on Tuesday, January 23, 2025. Mohammad, 43 years old, married, and a father, was arrested 1.5 years ago on drug-related charges and sentenced to death. The execution was conducted without prior notice to his family or the opportunity for a final visit. These prisoners are in addition to those previously reported.

Additionally, at Arak Prison, another prisoner named Abbas Mohammadi was executed at dawn on Sunday, January 19, 2025. Mohammadi, 49 years old and from Kangavar, was arrested in 2020 on drug-related charges and sentenced to death. These prisoners are in addition to those previously reported.

The increasing number of executions in such a short period has once again drawn the attention of human rights activists and international organizations to the state of human rights in the country.
