Iran Student activists sentenced to 16 years in prison
Three student activists detained during nationwide protests in January 2018 protests were sentenced to prison for participating in the demonstrations.
Sina Darvish Omran, a German translation student at Tehran University, was sentenced to a total of eight years behind bars, along with a two year ban on leaving the country, participating in political activities and being active on social media. He was tried at the 15th Branch of the Tehran Revolutionary Court headed by the Judge Salavati.
In another case in the same court branch, Ali Mozafari, an anthropology student at Tehran University was also sentenced to eight years of prison and a two year ban on leaving the country, participating in political activities and being active on social media.
Reports also indicate that 23 year old Massoumeh Mohammadi, who is a student from Fereydoon-Kenar Mazandaran, was sentenced to six months of prison. She is currently detained in Babol Prison.
According to a classified report obtained from inside the regime, 35% of those arrested during the nationwide protests were students. Deputy Interior Minister Hossein Zolfaghari also announced that more than 90% of the detainees were juveniles and teenagers under the age of 25.
