Iran’s Revolutionary Court Sentences Political Prisoner to Death

A revolutionary court in Mashhad, northeast Iran has sentenced a political prisoner to death.

Babak Paknia, the lawyer representing political prisoner Mohammad Javad Vafaei Sani said in a tweet today that his client has been sentenced to death for “corruption on earth.”

Mr. Paknia said that he will appeal the conviction within 20 days.

According to Paknia, political prisoner Mohammad Javad Vafaei Sani is charged with “corruption on earth” for allegedly setting fire to and destroying the government penitentiary building.

Seyed Mohammad Javad Vafaei, 26, was arrested in March 2020 in Mashhad.

A court set bail of 30 billion tomans for his temporary release, which his family could not afford.

In a statement released today, Iranian Resistance urged the Secretary-General of the United Nations, the UN Human Rights Council and the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, and all human rights bodies, as well as the European Union and its member states, to take urgent action to save the life of Mohammad Javad Vafaei Sani.

According to Amnesty International, Iran uses the death penalty increasingly as a weapon of political repression against protesters, dissidents, and members of minority groups. Executions are carried out after unfair trials based on forced confessions under torture.

In November 2021, Tehran Revolutionary Court sentenced political prisoner Kamran Rezaeifar to death for “corruption on earth” . Kamran’s trial took place on December 28, 2020. He was charged with being in contact with the MEK, a dissident organization, and was in prison for 77 days before being released on bail.

In May 2020, he was summoned and charged with “corruption on earth” and transferred to the Evin prison.
