In the past few days, the verdict for amputating the four fingers of a prisoner convicted of “theft” was carried out in Tehran’s Evin prison.

The victim who lost his four fingers was Morteza Jalili. The amputation was carried out using a guillotine machine.

An informed source confirmed the news. The source said Morteza Jalili and Yaqoub Fazli Koushki were relocated from the Greater Tehran Penitentiary to the Gorhardasht Prison (Rajaishahr) so their amputation verdict could be implemented.

“On Monday, September 5, Morteza Jalili was transferred from Rajaishahr prison in Karaj to Evin prison in Tehran, where the four fingers of his right hand were cut off in the prison’s infirmary using a guillotine device,” the source said.

Morteza Jalili, 28, comes from Islamshahr. He has been serving time in the Greater Tehran Penitentiary for seven years.

No information is available on the condition of Yaqub Fazli Koushki, who was also sentenced to amputation of fingers and transferred to the Rajaishahr Prison in Karaj.

The authorities of Evin Prison have confined Morteza Jalili in a solitary cell to prevent the spread of the news.

Last month, the amputation of the fingers of Behrouz Moradi was carried out in Evin prison in Tehran.

On July 29, 2022, Amnesty International issued a statement in which it said:

“Iranian authorities used a guillotine machine to amputate the fingers of a man convicted of theft on 27 July 2022, Amnesty International can confirm. Pouya Torabi, who is in his late thirties, was transferred on an emergency basis to a hospital immediately after his fingers were cut off in the presence of several officials and a doctor at Tehran’s Evin prison.

“Less than two months ago, on 31 May, Iranian authorities also amputated the fingers of Sayed Barat Hosseini, without giving him anaesthetic. He has since been imprisoned in isolation in Evin prison and denied adequate mental and physical health care for infections and trauma suffered after the amputation.”

Human rights organizations previously reported the danger of amputation of the fingers of eight prisoners in the Greater Tehran Penitentiary. Seven of them were identified as Hadi Rostami, Mehdi Shahivand, Mehdi Sharafian, Amir Shirmard, Morteza Jalili, Yaqoub Fazeli Koshki, and Ebrahim Rafiei.
