60 Sharif University students detained after being brutalized with batons and pellet guns

The semi-official Sharq daily reported that 60 Sharif University students were in detention. They were arrested during the State Security Force crackdown on Sharif University students after they held a gathering demanding the release of their fellow students. The latter had been detained during previous protests.

The Sharif University students in Tehran held a protest rally on Sunday, October 2, 2022. They demanded the release of all arrested students from their campus.

But the protesting students at the Sharif University of Technology were surrounded by plainclothes forces. The state security forces blocked all the roads leading to Sharif University.

The state security forces opened fire at the Sharif University students, injuring some while putting others in handcuffs and taking them away.

The exact number of students detained is not known.

Iranian officials planned to launch an attack on the Sharif University of Technology, similar to the attack on Tehran University in July 1999. The aim was to prevent other university students from being inspired by the Sharif University students.

For this reason, plainclothes agents were ordered to crack down on Sharif University students.

Several reports indicate the students were attacked by teargas and pellet guns.

Sharif University students chanted slogans against the Islamic Republic in their rally. They demanded the release of their fellow students arrested earlier. The situation was so worrying that Mohammad Ali Zolfigol, Minister of Science, was present at the scene to settle the problem.

The Council of Iranian Universities has identified around 30 to 40 detained students from Sharif University of Technology. The Council said the situation at Sharif University was tense. Any student trying to leave the area was shot with pellet guns and then arrested. Government and plainclothes agents attacked Sharif’s parking lot and violently beat the students. Other reports indicate that state security agents also hit university professors.

However, the state-run Shargh Daily announced that 60 students were arrested. This list only includes the names of Sharif University of Technology’s attendees whose families were willing to share their names.

Three student activists told this daily that some families were uncomfortable providing missing students’ names for various reasons.
