Detained protester Milad Zohrevand is Executed in the Central Prison of Hamedan

In the early morning of Thursday, November 23, 2023, the death sentence of Milad Zohrevand, a 21-year-old protester and one of the detainees of the nationwide protests in 2022, was secretly carried out in the Central Prison of Hamedan. Mr. Zohrevand was executed based on a fabricated scenario of “murdering an intelligence officer of the Revolutionary Guards” named Ali Nazari during the 2022 nationwide protests in Malayer.

According to reports received by the Iran Human Rights Monitor (IranHRM), the execution of this young protester was carried out secretly in Hamedan Prison, without prior notification and without allowing a final visitation with his family. Only 10 days passed since his death sentence was upheld by the Supreme Court. Since Friday morning, November 24, the atmosphere in the city of Malayer has become militarized, and armed forces have been stationed in public areas.

Milad Zohrevand, a resident of Malayer, was among those arrested during the 40th-day memorial ceremony for Mahsa (Zhina) Amini in Malayer on October 26, 2022. He and five other individuals were arrested by the Revolutionary Guards. Later, the Iranian judiciary sentenced him to death and transferred him from Malayer’s Central Prison to the Central Prison of Hamedan for the implementation of his sentence.

According to an informed source, this morning, on Friday, November 24, 2023, the funeral ceremony of Milad Zohrevand took place at the Bagh-e Behesht Cemetery in Hamedan. The ceremony was attended by a small number of family members and many security forces. The IRGC authorities did not agree to transfer Milad Zohrevand’s body to his hometown.

Milad Zohrevand is the eighth detained protester of the nationwide protests in 2022 to be executed in Iran. Mohsen Shekari, Majid Reza Rahnavard, Mohammad Mehdi Karami, Seyyed Mohammad Hosseini, Saleh Mirhashemi, Saeed Yaghoubi, and Majid Kazemi, were those executed before him.

Iran Human Rights Monitor (Iran HRM) urges the international community and human rights organizations to condemn the brutal execution of Milad Zohrevand and take immediate action to prevent the execution of other prisoners.
