November 22, 2023

Mohammad Mehdi Vossoughian, a 21-year-old student, is facing bogus charges of “propaganda against the system, communication with hostile countries, and membership in opposition groups.”

According to the Iran Human Rights Monitor (Iran HRM), the trial session to examine the charges against Mohammad Mehdi Vossoughian was held today, Wednesday, November 22, 2023, at the Revolutionary Court in Golpayegan County, in Isfahan Province.

Mohammad Mehdi Vossoughian, a student of anesthesia at the Medical School of Isfahan University, resides in Golpayegan. He appeared before the Revolutionary Court of Golpayegan today. His defense lawyers defended him against charges of propaganda against the system, communication with hostile countries, and membership in opposition groups.

The court convened while there were serious concerns about the health and safety of this prisoner in Golpayegan Prison. He was taken to a hospital on Friday, November 17, 2023, but security forces immediately returned him to prison.Mr. Vossoughian has been diagnosed with a severe intestinal infection. His condition was critical when he was transferred to the hospital last Friday.

However, the prison authorities did not grant him permission to stay in the hospital for necessary medical treatment. After only a few hours in the hospital and receiving medication, he was returned to Golpayegan Prison. It is concerning that the court proceeded with the trial of this prisoner while he is in such a worrying physical condition, having spent less than a week since his hospitalization.

According to the Iran Human Rights Monitor (Iran HRM), on Wednesday, September 20, 2023, at 2:00 PM, Mohammad Mehdi Vossoughian, a resident of Golpayegan, was arrested by security forces at his residence and transferred to an undisclosed location. Fifteen security officers raided Mr. Vossoughian’s residence and arrested him after physical violence and beatings.

Previously, Mohammad Mehdi Vossoughian had been suspended for one semester and deprived of the dormitory by the university’s Disciplinary Committee. Mohammad Mehdi Vossoughian’s mother, Masoumeh Yavari, was transferred to Dolat Abad Prison in Isfahan after their residence was searched by security forces.
Ms. Yavari was arrested at her home in Golpayegan on September 4, 2023. According to an informed source, “After his mother’s arrest, Mohammad Mehdi continuously followed up on her situation. He visited the prison several times to deliver medication to his sick mother but returned home without any result.”
