On Wednesday, September 20, 2023, at 2:00 PM, Mohammad Mehdi Vossoughian, a resident of Golpayegan, was arrested by security forces at his residence and transferred to an undisclosed location. Fifteen security officers raided Mr. Vossoughian’s residence and arrested him after physical violence and beatings.

According to the Iran Human Rights Monitor (IranHRM), Mohammad Mehdi Vossoughian, a 21-year-old student of anesthesia at the Medical School of Isfahan University, and the deputy secretary of the Council of Isfahan University of Medical Sciences. He is the son of Masoumeh Yavari, who was recently arrested and detained.

Ms. Yavari was arrested at her home in Golpayegan on September 4, 2023. According to an informed source, “After his mother’s arrest, Mohammad Mehdi continuously followed up on her situation. He visited the prison several times to deliver medication to his sick mother, but returned home without any result.”

Previously, Mohammad Mehdi Vossoughian had been suspended for one semester and deprived of the dormitory by the university’s Disciplinary Committee.

Mohammad Mehdi Vathoughian’s mother, Masoumeh Yavari, was transferred to Dolat Abad Prison in Isfahan after their residence was searched by security forces.

A source close to Mrs. Yavari’s family informed the Iran Human Rights Monitor (Iran HRM) that “Ms. Yavari underwent a disc herniation surgery some time ago and requires post-operative care. However, her physical condition has deteriorated significantly while in detention.”

Masoumeh Yavari also suffers from a heart condition, arterial blockage, and severe hypothyroidism. The prison authorities did not accept her necessary medications. As a result, her condition requires urgent medical attention and emergency treatment.

Masoumeh Yavari, born in 1978, is a homemaker and a mother of two children. She had previously spent three years in Evin, Gohardasht, and Qarchak prisons for her participation in the 2009 protests and her alleged connection with the opposition People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran. The court initially accused her of waging war on God (Moharebeh), but after some time, she was acquitted and sentenced to seven years in prison. She was released from prison after serving three years.

As this report is being published, no information is available regarding the exact reason for the arrest, the legal charges involved, or the location where Mr. Vossoughian is held.
