Three Kurds were sentenced to flogging in Iran and a fine for participating in a gathering to support the referendum on Kurdish independence and disturbing public order. Menareh Mullaveiseh and Ayoub Javanpour were each sentenced to 50 lashes and one million and 800 thousand tomans.

Iran continues to issue cruel punishments and hundreds are routinely flogged in Iran each year, sometimes in public.

According to Amnesty International, under Iranian law, more than 100 “offences” are punishable by flogging. These cover a wide array of acts, ranging from theft, assault, vandalism, defamation and fraud to acts that should not be criminalized at all such as adultery, intimate relationships between unmarried men and women, “breach of public morals” and consensual same-sex sexual relations.

Two other men accused of robbing homes were sentenced to flogging in Iran and 420 lashes, overall 220 years in prison, and denial of property. At the end of the trial, the judges sentenced each of the defendants to 50 years in prison and 99 lashes for robbery, 18 years in prison and 90 lashes for robbing homes, 31 years in prison for kidnapping and another 11 years in prison and 80 lashes for 11 counts of robbery.
