Mehran Akrami, a Kurdish citizen from Takab city, who was arrested during the nationwide protests of 2022 by security forces in the city of Saqqez, lost his life under the torture of the security forces at the Intelligence Office of this city. This citizen has been held in the detention center of Saqqez Intelligence for 16 months without any clear charges.

According to reports received by the Iran Human Rights Monitor (Iran HRM) on Tuesday, March 13, 2024, Mehran Akrami, a 32-year-old resident of Takab city, who was arrested during the nationwide protests in November 2022 in the city of Saqqez, was murdered under the torture of the security forces at the Intelligence Office of this city.

The Iran Human Rights Monitor (Iran HRM) has been informed that last week Mehran Akrami was severely beaten, tortured, and subjected to physical abuse in the detention center of the Saqqez Intelligence Office. He was taken to the hospital due to the sudden failure of both kidneys amid strict security measures. Akrami’s family has stated that on Tuesday, they visited their son and found two security officers stationed in his room, restraining both his hands and one of his legs to the bed.

On Tuesday, after being hospitalized for several days and undergoing successful dialysis, Mehran Akrami was returned to the detention center upon the order of the treating physician. Unfortunately, only 3 hours after being transferred back to the Intelligence Office detention center, he lost his life under torture.

According to a source close to the family who managed to see Mehran Akrami’s body, he had suffered a fracture in the back of his head. He also had severe injuries above his eyebrow and on his head, as well as bleeding from the mouth, nose, and ear areas.

Mehran Akrami’s body was handed over to his family on Thursday, and on the same day, amidst strict security measures, he was laid to rest in the city of Takab.

It should be noted that Mehran Akrami was arrested by security forces of the Saqqez Intelligence Office during the nationwide protests of November 2022. He has been held in the Saqqez Intelligence detention center without clear charges. During this period, Akrami’s family has made several attempts to secure his temporary release on bail, but each time the security authorities have prevented his temporary freedom.

Mehran Akrami was a member of the Takab sports community and excelled in the field of taekwondo. He held several provincial and national titles in this discipline. He had previously been arrested due to his political activities. Additionally, his brother and cousin were also detained during the nationwide protests of 2022 in the city of Takab.
