26th Week of the “No to Execution Tuesdays” Campaign
The “No to Execution Tuesdays” campaign has entered its 26th week, now joined by prisoners in Urmia, Marivan, Kamyaran, Baneh, and Salmas prisons. This campaign continues in the wake of recent executions, with over ten prisoners executed in the past week, including two political prisoners. These actions come as the Raisi government prepares to transition to a so-called reformist administration.
Unable to address the people’s legitimate demands, the government is accused of seeking to instill fear through executions, aiming to suppress future protests and uprisings by creating an atmosphere of terror among the oppressed.
Edris Jamshidzehi, a Baluch prisoner, was executed in Zahedan Central Prison on July 19 for the alleged murder of a Basiji member. Three days later, on July 22, Danial Kazeminejad was executed in Dizelabad Prison, Kermanshah, for allegedly killing a Revolutionary Guards member.
In response, political prisoners across Iran—who have campaigned against the death penalty for over six months—launched their 26th “No to Executions Tuesday” hunger strike on July 23, 2024. This week, five additional prisons—Urmia, Marivan, Kamyaran, Salmas, and Baneh—joined the campaign, bringing participation to 16 prisons nationwide. These include Evin (Wards 4, 6, and 8), Ghezel Hesar (Units 3 and 4), Karaj Central, Khorramabad, Tabriz (Women’s Ward), Ardabil, Ghaemshahr, Khoy, Naqadeh, Saqqez, Mashhad, Urmia, Marivan, Kamyaran, Baneh, and Salmas.
Through their hunger strike, prisoners have renewed their call for the abolition of executions and an end to torture in Iran.
