On Tuesday, August 27, 2024, prisoners in 19 prisons declared a hunger strike as part of this week’s “No to Execution Tuesdays” campaign. This week, Greater Tehran Prison joined the list of prisons with hunger-striking prisoners participating in the campaign.
Statement from the Striking Prisoners:
The “No to Execution Tuesdays” campaign continues into its 31st week, now supported by prisoners from Greater Tehran Prison. Additionally, two members of the Italian Parliament have joined the campaign in solidarity, further amplifying the international call to end the death penalty.
In August 2024, at least 126 people were hanged, deprived of their right to life, and countless others remain on death row in prisons across the country—each a victim of the regime’s systematic incompetence. The repressive apparatus has intensified its pressure on prisoners who have protested against these inhumane actions, stripping them of their basic rights. A clear example of this is the denial of phone calls and visitation rights, as well as the transfer of political prisoner Armita Pavir to solitary confinement in Tabriz Prison.
The Wave of Executions in August 2024: At Least 127 Executions
Given the recent surge in executions and the history of the newly appointed cabinet members, the regime’s new administration can be characterized as one of repression and executions. This cabinet’s formation signals a grim prelude to further societal repression.
Despite the intense pressures and repression imposed by the religious dictatorship on both the campaign and Iranian society, the prisoners continue to resist the regime’s crackdown on dissent and executions. According to reliable sources, a group of political prisoners in Greater Tehran Prison has joined the “No to Execution Tuesdays” campaign as of this week.
Fortunately, the awakened consciences of the world have heard the call of resistance to this campaign, including support from prominent Italian representatives who have publicly declared their backing for the “No to Execution Tuesdays” campaign.
The striking prisoners of the campaign are now present in 19 different prisons, including Evin Prison (Wards 4, 6, and 8), Ghezel Hesar Prison (Units 3 and 4), Karaj Central Prison, Khorramabad Prison, Nizam Shiraz Prison, Mashhad Prison, Lakan Prison in Rasht, Qaemshahr Prison, Tabriz Prison, Ardabil Prison, Urmia Prison, Khoy Prison, Naqadeh Prison, Salmas Prison, Saqqez Prison, Baneh Prison, Marivan Prison, Kamyaran Prison, and Greater Tehran Prison. This campaign, which seeks to abolish the death penalty and torture in Iran, continues to gain momentum. Once again, we call on all prisoners in different prisons to join the “No to Execution Tuesdays” campaign. We also urge all awakened consciences around the world to support this movement in its fight to abolish the death penalty and confront the regime’s violations of human rights.
