Fifth Anniversary of November 2019 Uprising
On Tuesday, November 19, 2024, prisoners in 25 prisons continued their coordinated hunger strike against executions.
This campaign coincided with the fifth anniversary of the November 2019 popular uprising, during which the suppressive forces of the criminal clerical regime, on the orders of Khamenei himself, massacred over 1,500 protesters.
In a statement released today, the prisoners reported that in the past week, 28 individuals were executed by the clerical regime. One prisoner was executed publicly, another was executed twice, and yet another was killed under brutal torture.
The full text of the political prisoners’ statement participating in the “No to Execution Tuesdays” campaign is as follows:
Continuation of the Hunger Strike in the 43rd Week of “No to Execution Tuesdays” Campaign in 25 Different Prisons;
Brutal Executions on the Anniversary of the November 2019 Uprising
On the fifth anniversary of the November 2019 popular protests, we are witnessing an increase in brutal executions and the issuance of such inhumane sentences, particularly targeting young people arrested during the 2022 protests.
In the past week alone, six defendants in the “Ekbatan Case” (Milad Armoon, Alireza Kafaie, Alireza Barmarz Pournak, Hossein Nemati, Navid Najaran, and Amir Mohammad Khosheghbal) were sentenced to death following a judicial process fraught with contradictions, injustice, and ambiguity. Additionally, an anonymous political prisoner named Mohammad Mehdi S., also arrested during the 2022 protests, was sentenced to death by Branch Five of the Criminal Court of Khorasan Razavi Province.
Since last Tuesday, the oppressive clerical regime has executed 28 individuals, including three women and 13 Afghan nationals. This brings the total number of executions since the beginning of Aban (the Iranian month that started on October 22) to over 133. On November 6 alone, 18 people were executed.
This week, the regime carried out a public execution of a prisoner, continuing its pattern of brutal actions. In a particularly inhumane incident, another prisoner, Ahmad Alizadeh, was executed twice at Qezelhessar Prison. Furthermore, Ghaffar Akbari was tortured to death at the Malekan Police Detention Center in East Azerbaijan Province, highlighting the regime’s ongoing catalog of atrocities.
We have also learned that Seyed Alireza Razavi, a young man sentenced to corruption and Moharebeh (waging war against God) by Judge Salavati for clashing with suppressive forces, was secretly executed about 20 days ago in Qezelhessar Prison without notifying his family.
At a time when the regime has escalated its repression and executions against the people in chains, the resilience of prisoners persists. In 25 prisons, members of the “No to Execution Tuesdays” campaign have been holding hunger strikes every Tuesday for the past 43 weeks, raising their voices against executions despite severe pressure.
The “No to Execution Tuesdays” Campaign condemns all executions in Iran and calls on the UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Iran, Ms. Mai Sato, to take serious action to save the lives of prisoners facing execution, which has alarmingly increased in recent days. The Campaign also urges her to hold accountable the perpetrators and enablers of these inhumane acts.
Furthermore, the Campaign members appeal to the honorable people of Iran to actively support the “No to Execution Tuesdays” Campaign with unity and solidarity, becoming the voice of the anonymous and defenseless prisoners on death row.
Members of the “No to Execution Tuesdays” Campaign will go on hunger strike on Tuesday, November 19, 2024, in the 43rd week of the campaign, which will take place in 25 prisons.
The striking prisoners are from the following prisons:
Evin Prison (Women’s Ward, Wards 4 and 8), Qezelhessar Prison (Units 3 and 4), Karaj Central Prison, Greater Tehran Prison, Arak Prison, Khorramabad Prison, Asadabad Prison in Isfahan, Dastgerd Prison in Isfahan, Sheiban Prison in Ahvaz, Shiraz Military Prison, Bam Prison, Kahnouj Prison, Mashhad Prison, Qaemshahr Prison, Lakan Prison in Rasht (Men’s and Women’s Wards), Ardabil Prison, Tabriz Prison, Urmia Prison, Salmas Prison, Khoy Prison, Naqadeh Prison, Saqqez Prison, Baneh Prison, Marivan Prison, and Kamyaran Prison.
