At Least Seven Executions Carried Out in Iran Within Two Days

November 18, 2024
FacebookTwitterEmail

Reports indicate that at least seven prisoners were executed in various prisons across Iran on Saturday, November 16, 2024, and Sunday, November 17, 2024. The executions took place in Khorramabad, Rasht, Zanjan, Birjand, and Isfahan prisons. The charges ranged from drug-related offenses to murder.

Execution in Khorramabad Central Prison

On Sunday, November 17, 2024, a prisoner named Mostafa Molaei was executed in Khorramabad Central Prison. He had been sentenced to death after being convicted of murder. The execution reportedly took place at dawn.

Execution in Lakan Prison, Rasht

In Lakan Prison, located in Rasht, authorities carried out the execution of Mehdi Gilani on Saturday, November 16, 2024. He was convicted on drug-related charges and had been sentenced to death accordingly.

Execution in Zanjan Central Prison

Faraj Sarmadi, a 32-year-old prisoner, was executed in Zanjan Central Prison on Sunday, November 17, 2024. He had been in detention for over two years and was convicted of sexual assault. The sentence was carried out at dawn.

Triple Execution in Birjand Central Prison

Three prisoners were executed at Birjand Central Prison on Sunday, November 17, 2024. The identities of two of the individuals were confirmed:

Parviz Barahouei, a resident of Zahedan, was arrested in 2021 on drug-related charges and subsequently sentenced to death.

Rahim Faghiri, a 34-year-old father of three from the village of Siovedar in the Shapiran district of Salmas, was also executed on charges related to drug offenses.

The identity of the third prisoner remains undisclosed.

Execution in Isfahan Central Prison

Sajjad Karami, a 31-year-old man from the town of Varnamkhast in Isfahan Province, was executed in Isfahan Central Prison on Saturday, November 16, 2024. He was convicted of murder three years ago and had been on death row since.

Concerns Over the Continued Use of the Death Penalty

These recent executions underscore Iran’s persistent use of capital punishment, demanding urgent attention from the international community to pressure the Iranian authorities to halt these practices. The country continues to have one of the highest execution rates globally, particularly for drug-related offenses.

Reports suggest that many prisoners are coerced into confessing to crimes they did not commit, leading to their execution. This situation highlights the urgent need for increased international scrutiny and pressure to compel Iran to end its use of the death penalty.
