On Human Rights Day, the ‘No to Execution Tuesdays’ Campaign Continues into Its 46th Week
On December 10, 1948, following years of human rights violations around the world by authoritarian and dictatorial regimes, the United Nations designated this day as Human Rights Day and established a framework to prevent further violations, aiming to safeguard human rights universally.
Seventy-six years after this historic event, egregious human rights violations continue to occur worldwide, particularly in Iran. Alongside the repression of protests, the killing of dissenters, and the enforced disappearances of hundreds of individuals, the regime has executed more than 100,000 people over its 45-year rule. Alarmingly, in just the past 20 days, 75 individuals have been executed. Furthermore, within less than nine months of the Iranian year 1403 (which began on March 20, 2024), 770 individuals have been hanged. Undoubtedly, the regime of Velayat-e Faqih holds the global record for severe human rights violations.
The coincidence of Human Rights Day with the horrifying revelations about Syria’s infamous prisons, such as the “Saydnaya Prison” near Damascus, may be accidental, but it serves as a stark warning for all conscientious individuals and human rights organizations. These atrocities—executions by hanging, burying people alive, crushing them in “press machines,” and employing countless other torture and execution methods—must prompt more serious investigations and accountability for the perpetrators of these crimes, who continue to justify their actions as “legal executions” without answering for their deeds.
The “No to Execution Tuesdays” campaign, now in its 46th week, congratulates the free-spirited people of Syria and the resilient prisoners who have been freed after years of torture. It expresses hope for the liberation of Iranian prisoners and the abolishment of death sentences. On Human Rights Day, this campaign sees these revelations (from Syria) as a turning point, calling for greater attention from human rights activists, freedom fighters, and humanitarians to oppose executions. The goal is to transform this struggle into a broader, more united movement to disarm rulers of their criminal weapon of executions.
