Strong Condemnation of the Confirmation of Execution Sentences for Four Political Prisoners:Behrouz Ehsani, Mehdi Hasani, Pakhshan Azizi, and Mojahed Korkor
As Iran grapples with intensifying economic, cultural, and political crises—fueled by systemic corruption and structural failures—the government remains incapable of addressing these challenges. Consequently, public protests across the country continue to grow.
The ruling regime is aware that rising public discontent could soon escalate into widespread uprisings, threatening its grip on power. In a misguided effort to prevent such movements, authorities have intensified executions to instill fear in society. Over the past week alone, at least 17 individuals were executed, and since the beginning of Iranian month of Dey (21 December 2024), the number has surpassed 102.
Amid this repression, the Supreme Court confirmed death sentences for political prisoners Behrouz Ehsani, Mehdi Hassani, and Pakhshan Azizi. Mojahed Korkor, along with four Baluch and four Arab political prisoners, had already faced similar verdicts, placing their lives in grave danger. Meanwhile, prisoners convicted of non-political offenses face daily executions.
In protest against these inhumane sentences, numerous political activists inside and outside prisons, alongside grieving families, have expressed strong condemnation and opposition to the executions.
In response to the surge of executions, a number of prisoners from Haviq-Talesh, the women’s ward of Adelabad Prison in Shiraz, Joveyn Prison in Razavi Khorasan Province, and Borazjan Prison in Bushehr Province have recently joined the “No to Execution Tuesdays” Campaign, announcing their solidarity by participating in the hunger strike. This brings the number of participating prisons to 34.
The members of the “No to Execution Tuesdays” Campaign strongly condemned the confirmation of death sentences for political prisoners Mojahed Korkor, Pakhshan Azizi, and two of their own members, Mehdi Hassani and Behrouz Ehsani. They reiterated their commitment to using every available means to abolish the death penalty in Iran and eradicate such medieval practices. The Campaign calls on all segments of society to join in resisting these execution orders.
As previously emphasized by the Campaign, the fight against the inhumane practice of execution is only possible through solidarity, collective action, and broad societal support.
On Tuesday, January 14, 2025, marking the 51st week of the Campaign, members of the “No to Execution Tuesdays” Campaign will stage a hunger strike in the following 34 prisons:
