Moghim Asgari, a 70-year-old political prisoner, is serving a 22-month sentence in Choubindar Prison, Qazvin, under dire conditions. His deteriorating health, caused by heart disease and internal medical issues, coupled with the inhumane conditions of the prison, has raised significant concerns about the safety and well-being of this retired teacher.
Overcrowded and Inhumane Conditions in Choubindar Prison
Choubindar Prison is grossly overcrowded, making it an unsuitable facility for housing prisoners, especially elderly political prisoners. Reports indicate that between 180 to 200 inmates are crammed into small wards, with many forced to sleep in hallways and on the floor due to lack of adequate space.
In addition to overcrowding, the widespread infestation of pests such as bedbugs has led to outbreaks of skin and infectious diseases. The quality and quantity of food provided are also extremely poor. Prisoners must rely on purchasing food from the prison store at exorbitant prices to obtain anything remotely edible, adding financial strain to their already difficult circumstances.
Limited Communication and Inadequate Medical Care
Prisoners in Choubindar are allowed only brief and restricted phone calls with their families, further isolating them and causing psychological distress. These limitations, combined with the lack of sufficient medical facilities, create an especially grim situation for inmates like Moghim Asgari, who suffers from chronic illnesses.
Despite his critical need for ongoing medical care, prison authorities have consistently denied Asgari medical furlough. This neglect poses a severe risk to his life and violates his basic human rights.
The failure to provide proper medical treatment and the refusal to grant medical leave to Moghim Asgari could have devastating and irreversible consequences. His family has repeatedly warned that the prison authorities will bear full responsibility for any harm that befalls him.
Asgari’s family is urgently calling for action to improve his situation. Their demands include granting medical leave, improving sanitation and nutritional standards in the prison, and ensuring that the rights of prisoners are respected in line with Iran’s international obligations.
Moghim Asgari’s deteriorating health and the inhumane conditions he endures highlight the critical need for immediate intervention. His life depends on swift and decisive action.
