British Couple’s Hunger Strike; Scenario of State-Sponsored Hostage-Taking

Iran’s State-Sponsored Hostage-Taking – Nightmare of Evin

The exploitation of foreign nationals and dual citizens as “leverage” constitutes one of the darkest dimensions of human rights violations in the Islamic Republic. The case of Craig Foreman and his wife, Dr. Lindsay Foreman, a British tourist couple who were captured during a motorcycle tour and sentenced to imprisonment on fabricated charges, while having a tour guide, is a textbook example of the state-sponsored hostage-taking in Iran. The critical situation of this couple, who are currently on a prolonged hunger strike in Evin Prison, reflects the systematic torture inflicted upon foreign nationals and also exposes the catastrophic reality of human rights violations against prisoners in Iran; a structure in which the prison has been transformed into a graveyard for international law and human dignity.

The Hunger Strike of Craig and Lindsay Foreman; A Cry of Helplessness in “The Hell on Earth”

According to the latest documented human rights reports, following the unjust rejection of their appeal in June 2026, Craig and Lindsay Foreman went on a protest hunger strike to challenge their politically motivated sentences, the ban on contact with their families, and severe judicial deprivations. Pressure on the couple intensified significantly after they spoke about the staggering number of executions during an interview with a foreign media outlet. Their condition has now escalated into a critical phase and a “medical emergency”:

  • Severe Weight Loss and the Risk of Death: Craig has been on a hunger strike for over 50 days, and Lindsay for more than 40 days. Reports indicate a drastic weight loss of 16 kg for Craig and 14 kg for Lindsay.
  • The Physical Crisis of Dr. Lindsay Foreman: Lindsay, who is being held in the women’s ward of Evin Prison, is virtually unable to walk due to severe low blood pressure, tremors, extreme dizziness, and profound weakness resulting from her hunger strike of over 40 days. Despite this, prison authorities refuse to provide her with minimum medical care by barring nurses from entering the ward and failing to register her medical status. To reach the prison clinic, Lindsay Foreman is forced to navigate a long path that includes a corridor and approximately 30 stairs, and she has not received a medical checkup for about 10 days. Their family has described this isolation as living in a “true hell on earth”.
  • Craig Foreman’s Poignant Message from Inside Evin:

“We were charged based on falsified evidence that was fabricated to suit the maximum sentence. We are not spies, and the charges against us are simply not true. We are now in a prison in a war zone; we have gone from a challenging situation to a life-threatening situation, and our safety is constantly at serious risk.”

Systematic Violations of Prisoners’ Rights in Iran; A General Crisis inside Dark Wards

The emergency situation of this couple is merely a microcosm of the widespread violations of the rights of all prisoners (political, ideological, and ordinary alike) in Iran. The judicial system and the Prisons Organization structurally trample upon the foundational principles of human rights:

  • The Use of Medical Deprivation as a Tool of Torture: Deliberately denying ailing prisoners access to hospitals and specialized medical care (as witnessed in the silent killing of Jabbar Mostafa in Evin) has become a routine practice to exert double pressure.
  • Psychological Torture Stemming from Judicial Limbo and Horrific Conditions: Subjecting prisoners to absolute isolation, cutting off continuous communication with their families, and forcing them to live under agonizing psychological pressure (such as the execution-induced suicide of Mostafa Nezami in Qezel Hesar) are engineered mechanisms designed to crush human dignity.
  • A Complete Lack of Safety Protocols in Times of Crisis: The transformation of the prison environment into a high-risk zone during geopolitical crises and military tensions, without the slightest commitment or plan to protect the lives and safety of inmates, exposes prisoners to direct and irreparable threats.

Conclusion and Executive-Legal Solutions (An Urgent Call to Action)

Ending state-sponsored hostage-taking in Iran and halting the machinery of judicial repression demands immediate and decisive action from international institutions. International peace and engagement must not be achieved at the cost of turning a blind eye to the expectant eyes of innocent prisoners. To save the lives of Craig and Lindsay Foreman and to halt the ongoing trend of prisoners’ rights violations, the following concrete measures are imperative:

  1. International Exposure and Neutralization of Fabricated Cases: It is necessary that the global forums and human rights organizations immediately publish documentation focusing on the falsified nature of the charges, thereby neutralizing Tehran’s scenario of political blackmail and judicial hostage-taking.
  2. Immediate Dispatch of a Fact-Finding Committee and Medical Observers to Evin: Given the critical hunger strike of Lindsay and Craig Foreman, international pressure on the Red Cross and the World Health Organization (WHO) to secure entry for independent inspectors into Evin Prison to mandate the registration of their health status and ensure immediate access to medical treatment is vital.
  3. Sanctioning Judges and Officials Responsible for Security-Related Fabricated Cases: Revolutionary Court judges and detention center officials who issue heavy sentences based on fabricated evidence must be placed under severe human rights sanctions and held accountable as violators of human dignity.
  4. Conditioning Global Diplomatic Engagements upon Respect for Prisoners’ Right to Life: International bodies and governments must directly condition any dialogue, agreement, or engagement with Tehran upon the cessation of medical torture, the unconditional release of innocent prisoners, and an end to the policy of hostage-taking.

The right to life and human dignity knows no borders. Silence in the face of state-sponsored hostage-taking in Iran and ignoring the cries for help from innocent people in captivity amounts to complicity in the reproduction of oppression. The Islamic Republic’s machinery of torture, execution, and hostage-taking must be stopped.
