A group of political prisoners in Gohardasht prison of Karaj wrote a letter to Asma Jahangir, the UN Special Rapporteur for Human Rights in Iran, to protest the physical abuse of their wives and daughters during inspections before their prison visits.
They wrote in this letter: “Inspection of visitors who come for cabinet meetings is so abusive that it cannot be considered as routine. As for our families and loved ones, the prison guards take every woman into a room where two female guards inspect them. They are forced to take off almost all of their clothes to be thoroughly frisked. The guards touch all their body to make sure they do not bring in anything illegal. Our families and loved ones did not want the news of this sexual harassment leak to the media. We are the only ones who are informed of the mistreatment of our wives and sisters. Such offending behavior compelled us to turn to you, may be your dialogues with the Iranian regime affect their behavior.”
