On Wednesday morning, May 9, 2018, a prisoner was executed at Gohardasht (Rajaee Shahr) Prison of Karaj, west of Tehran. The prisoner convicted of intentional murder and sentenced to execution (nemesis) is identified as “Reza Hamidi”. Reza was transferred from ward ten of this prison to solitary confinement on May 7th.

An informed source said: “Reza was condemned to execution for killing his mother-in-law. He wasn’t able to gain the forgiveness of those who complained till the last moment.” This execution is not announced by Iran’s media up to the publishing of this news.

The state media on May 5 reported that another prisoner was hanged in Babol Prison, north of Iran. The victim who was identified by the state media only as A.F, 27, had been found guilty of murder.

Iran is one of the 23 countries that have not yet abolished the death penalty, and according to an April 12th report released by Amnesty International, “more than half (51%) of all recorded executions in 2017 were carried out in Iran.”

Ranking second behind China in terms of executions around the world, Iran has “carried out 84% of the global total number of executions along with Saudi Arabia, Iraq, and Pakistan.”
