Detained Teacher on trial for peacefully advocating teachers’ rights in Iran

July 23, 2018

Detained teachers’ rights activist Mohammad Habibi went trial on July 23 at Branch 26 of the Revolutionary Court in Tehran for the charges of “assembly and collusion against national security,” “propaganda against the state” and “disturbing public order,” the charges brought by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.
Since May 10 in Tehran, when Mohammad Habibi was attacked by the state security forces and arrested during a teacher’s gathering, Mohammad Habibi has been held at the Great Tehran Penitentiary and refused, by judiciary officials, to be released on bail. He was being denied his monthly state salary while under temporary detention and despite not being convicted of any crime.
Previously Habibi -year-old member of the Iranian Teachers’ Trade Association (ITTA) of Tehran was battered and violently detained on March 3, 2018, for peacefully advocating teachers’ rights in Iran.
Mohammad Habibi has been a well-respected teacher for the past eighteen years, working officially for the Ministry of Education. Reportedly, he had already been threatened by intelligence agents for his trade union related activities and organizing assemblies.
