Juvenile offender Mohammad Hassan Rezaii was executed at dawn on Thursday, December 31, 2020, in Lakan Prison, in Rasht, northern Iran.

He had been transferred to solitary confinement the day before to be prepared for execution.

Mohammad Hassan Rezaii committed murder 12 years ago at the age of 16.

Mr. Rezaii had been taken to solitary confinement once before last year to prepare for execution. But the implementation of his verdict was postponed. He was taken for execution again, two weeks ago, but the implementation of the verdict was postponed and he was returned to the ward.

Finally, on Wednesday, December 30, Mohammad Hassan Rezaii was moved to solitary confinement and his family called for their last visitation.

This execution has not been announced by the state media as this news is being published.

Amnesty International issued an urgent action yesterday, December 30, calling on the regime officials to stop this inhuman verdict.

Iran is one of the last remaining countries in the world which continued to carry out executions, even for crimes committed by minors, in violation of its obligations under the International Covenant On Civil and Political Rights and Convention on the Rights of the Child.

The Iranian Judiciary is headed by Ebrahim Raisi, a member of the Death Committees in the 1988 massacre of 30,000 political prisoners in Iran.

Two other juveniles, Majid Esmailzadeh and Shayan Saeedpour, were also executed in April 2020. The Iranian regime executed at least six juveniles in 2019 who had committed murders under the age of 18. They were Amin Sedaqat, Mehdi Sohrabifar, Amir Ali Shadabi, Alireza Khodaii, Medhi Chenani and Touraj Azizi (Aziz-zadeh) Qassemi.

At least 90 juvenile offenders in Iran are on the death row.

Iran Human Rights Monitor condemns the execution of Mohammad Hassan Rezaii and calls for abolishment of the death penalty in Iran, especially the execution of juvenile offenders.
