Woman, 80, flogged before being sent to prison despite injuries

An 80-year-old woman was flogged in the Khoy Judiciary in northwestern Iran and was then immediately taken to prison despite her poor condition, according to Kurdistan Human Rights Network.

On November 28, 2019, Salbi Marandi, 80, was summoned to the Office of the Implementation of Verdicts in the city of Khoy, where she was lashed 70 times. She was then transferred to the women’s ward of Khoy Prison to serve her eight-month prison term while she was unable to move after being flogged.

Salbi Marandi is the mother of Behrouz Zinal Nejad who died in Khoy Prison last year. Behrouz had gone on hunger strike to demand that he be allowed a furlough and died under suspicious circumstances five days later. Khoy prison officials claimed that he committed suicide.

His family including his mother and sister rejected the suicide claims after seeing his body and went to the office of the head of prison.

They went to the prison’s office and objected to the authorities. They were mistreated by the prison warden and the judge, then arguments ensued between the grieving family and prison officials and some office appliance were damaged.

Following the incident, the prison warden and the judge filed a complaint against this family and the Public Court of Khoy sentenced Salbi Marandi and Atefeh Zeinal-Nejad to 70 lashes and 8 months in prison, each. Atefeh Zeinal-Nejad has refrained from introducing herself to court for the implementation of the sentence thus far.
