Food poisoning among inmates of the Great Tehran Penitentiary

April 12, 2020
Alarming Situation of Iranian Prisons Amid COVID-19 Outbreak
FacebookTwitterEmail

A number of prisoners detained in the Great Tehran Penitentiary, a.k.a. Fashafuyeh, were poisoned by eating the prison’s rotten food on Friday, April 10, 2020.

The lunch served on Friday, April 10, was rice and lentils with soya which poisoned some of the prisoners.

Eight prisoners have already died of covid-19 infection in this prison. Food poisoning, contaminated water and any other illness among prisoners will expose them to further risk of infection.

Water in this prison is also contaminated and the water wells dug in this prison for potable water, are only 100 meters away from industrial farms breeding livestock, the city of Hassanabad and the industrial township. The potable water gets mixed and contaminated with black water and is no longer drinkable.

Prisoners have to buy mineral water from the prison’s store which costs several times other stores outside the prison. The bathroom and restrooms are also in horrible conditions. Food quality is low.

Authorities in the Great Tehran Penitentiary have maintained silence about the spread of the outbreak in this prison and do not report on the conditions of political and ordinary prisoners. Therefore, the lives of many prisoners in this compound is in serious danger of being infected.

Following riots in at least 12 Iranian prisons, authorities in Fashafuyeh Prison have installed thick iron bars in the main corridor of Ward 5 and between different halls to prevent eruption of any riots.
